This isn't a binder and a handshake — it's a real curriculum designed to get you producing.

Will I need to travel for training?

No. The University of Farmers® training for new agency owners is fully virtual right now. You can complete it from your home or your office. I've seen people knock it out while still working their current job. No flights, no hotels — just focused learning on your schedule.

What if I don't have any sales experience?

Accepted Answer

Then you're exactly who this was built for. I didn't come from a sales background either — I came from hunger. Farmers isn't looking for polished salespeople; they're looking for driven, entrepreneurial people who want to own something. The training fills the skill gap. What I can't teach you is the desire to show up every day — that has to come from you.

Can I keep my existing insurance appointments?

That depends. Farmers will review your current appointments to check for conflicts of interest — that's standard. But here's what most people don't realize: as a Farmers agency owner, you also get access to additional carriers through Kraft Lake Insurance Agency, a Farmers-owned brokerage. In most cases, you end up with more options, not fewer.

How much capital do I need to qualify?

It varies by market and which entry program you're pursuing. The capital requirement exists because you're opening a real business — not clocking in somewhere. That said, the Protégé Program is specifically designed for candidates who don't have significant capital. If you hit your production metrics over 12 months, we waive the requirement entirely. Sweat equity counts here.

What expenses am I responsible for?

You're an independent contractor, so you own your overhead — office rent, utilities, staff pay, licensing fees, marketing, supplies. I won't sugarcoat that. But Farmers negotiates discounts with vendors to help bring those costs down, and the commission structure is built to cover your expenses and then some once you're producing. Build the business right and your revenue outpaces your overhead fast.

Do I need to hire staff?

Yes — and I'd argue it's one of the best things about this model. You're required to start with at least two licensed, appointed staff members. That forces you to build a real team from day one instead of trying to do everything yourself. The agents I've seen struggle are the ones who try to be a one-person show. Your staff multiplies your capacity. Farmers provides resources to help you find and train them.

Do I need to have an office?

Yes. Farmers requires a professional, branded storefront — and I think that's a feature, not a bug. A physical presence in your community builds trust in a way that a website never fully can. The good news: Farmers has an Exterior Branding Bonus Program that helps cover your initial signage and branding costs. They want your office to look sharp too.

What are the office space requirements?

There's no minimum square footage requirement. What matters is that the location looks professional and gets approved by a Farmers representative. I've seen agents start in modest spaces and grow into larger ones as their book builds. Start smart, not oversized.

Who decides where my office goes?

Accepted Answer

You do — with input from Farmers. You pick the area you want to serve, find the location, and Farmers approves it. My team can also help you think through what makes a strong location for your market. This is your business. We just want to make sure you set it up in a place where you can win.

What recruiting resources are available for staffing?

Accepted Answer

Farmers has relationships with recruiting organizations nationwide that can help you find licensed producers. But I'll be honest with you — the best agents I know built their teams through their own networks first. People they trusted. People who shared their work ethic. Farmers gives you the tools; your judgment picks the right people.

Is there a franchise fee?

Accepted Answer

No. This is not a franchise. There are no franchise fees. You're an independent contractor building your own business under one of the most recognized insurance brands in the country — without paying a franchise premium to do it. That's a significant advantage over most business ownership models.

Can I work remotely?

Accepted Answer

Not fully — and I think that's the right call. Building an insurance agency is a community business. Your clients need to be able to walk in, shake your hand, and trust that you're planted in their neighborhood. You control your own hours and schedule as a business owner, but the storefront requirement exists for a reason. Presence builds production.

Are there health and other benefits available?

Yes. Farmers agency owners have access to a benefits program that covers dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, accident, critical illness, and hospital plans. You're not going without coverage just because you're self-employed. That was a big deal for me when I was starting out, and it should matter to you too.

Are there retirement savings options?

Yes — and this one is underrated. Farmers offers the Agency Force Deferred Compensation Plan, which lets you save pre-tax with no dollar cap on deferrals and no annual contribution limits. You can start taking distributions as early as 3 years in without a penalty. On top of that, many agents eventually sell their book of business on the open market — that's a real exit strategy with real value. You're building an asset, not just a paycheck.

There are several layers. You earn commissions on every policy written and assigned to your agency. On top of that, new agency owners can qualify for up to 36 months of new agency bonuses — that's a significant runway of additional income while you're building your book. I won't give you a number I can't guarantee — because it genuinely depends on your agency size, your market, your expenses, and how hard you work. What I will tell you is that the agents in my district who treat this like a business — not a job — build income that most people in traditional careers never see. A lot more than people expect. You'll have access to the full Farmers® product line — auto, home, life, business, and more. You also get access to additional carriers through Kraft Lake Insurance Agency, a Farmers-owned brokerage, for situations where Farmers products aren't the right fit. And if you get your securities license, you can offer financial services products too. The product shelf is deep.

Do I pay for my own leads?

Generally, yes — and I think that's the honest answer most recruiters won't give you. You're a business owner, and lead generation is a business expense. Farmers does work with lead vendors to get discounted rates for agency owners, and they're investing in data and technology to help identify quality prospects. But the agents who win long-term build referral networks and community presence so they're not dependent on purchased leads forever. I'll show you how to do that.

Which additional carriers can I access?

Through Kraft Lake Insurance Agency — Farmers' own brokerage — you can access carriers beyond the Farmers product line. This matters because it means you can serve clients whose needs fall outside what Farmers writes directly. You're not leaving money on the table or sending clients elsewhere. That flexibility is a real competitive advantage.

Are there territory restrictions on where I can write business?

No hard territories. You can write Farmers business in any state where you're properly licensed and appointed. A lot of my agents are appointed in multiple states. If you want to grow beyond Alabama, the path is open — you just need the licenses to do it.

Are there other ways to get involved beyond owning an agency?

Yes. If full agency ownership isn't the right first step for you, there are other entry points — working as a producer for an existing agency owner, or exploring the Associate path.
